For that reason, several big stars, like Spike Lee and Will Smith, stated that they will not attend the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Academy, after the negative repercussion,<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/awards\/oscars-diversity-academy-emergency-meeting-1201685630\/\"> announced changes in order to diversify the racial diversity of its members.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who criticize the insurgence against the Oscars argue that there were few black actors with outstanding performances in 2015. One of the notable exceptions would be Idris Elba for his role in the Netflix picture \u201cBeasts of no nation\u201d. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tubefilter.com\/2016\/01\/14\/netflix-oscars-academy-awards-beasts-of-no-nation\/\">some speculate that Elba\u2019s non nomination happened because of the dispute between Netflix and movie theaters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The presence of only White actors among the nominees, at least, shows a problem in minorities representation (African Americans, Hispanics and Asians) in the movie industry. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2016\/01\/film-and-race\">According to \u201cThe Economist\u201d<\/a>, curiously, Hispanics and Asians suffer even more that African Americans in Hollywood (numbers since 2000):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">African Americans \u2013 12.6% of the American population \u2013 10% of Oscar\u2019s nominees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hispanics \u2013 16% of the American population \u2013 3% of nominees;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asi\u00e1ticos \u2013 ~ 5% of the American population \u2013 1% of nominees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The article from \u201cThe Economist\u201d argues that the issue might not be with the Academy per se, but in the lack of minority actors in top roles: \u201cFor most of the past 15 years, the Academy has largely judged what has been put in front of them: minority actors land 15% of top roles, 15% of nominations and 17% of wins\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_692\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-692\" class=\"size-full wp-image-692\" src=\"https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197.png\" alt=\"Gr\u00e1fico retirada do site: http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2016\/01\/film-and-race\" width=\"1190\" height=\"756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197.png 1190w, https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197-1024x651.png 1024w, https:\/\/otaviopinto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160123_woc197-816x518.png 816w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1190px) 100vw, 1190px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taken from: http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2016\/01\/film-and-race<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In relation to all speaking characters in Hollywood, <a href=\"http:\/\/annenberg.usc.edu\/sitecore\/shell\/Applications\/Content%20Manager\/~\/media\/MDSCI\/Racial%20Inequality%20in%20Film%202007-2013%20Final.ashx?db=master&amp;la=en&amp;vs=1&amp;ts=20140731T1347226383\">an academic paper <\/a>shows the following division in 2013: 74,1%, white; 14,1%, black; 4,9%, Hispanic, 4,4%, Asian, and 2,5% from other ethnicities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, that data give us a summary of that issue in the US. For Brazilians, after such reading, an interesting question arises: How is racial diversity in the Globo\u2019s (the biggest Brazilian TV station) award for best soap opera\u2019s actors of the year in a country that has more than 50% of its population constituted of black and mixed people?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Initially, important to say that, as in other elite professional fields, there is a low presence of black and mixed actors in Brazilian soap operas. <a href=\"http:\/\/temas.folha.uol.com.br\/desigualdade-no-brasil\/negros\/com-metade-da-populacao-negros-sao-so-18-em-cargos-de-destaque-no-brasil.shtml\">According an article by the traditional \u201cFolha de S\u00e3o Paulo\u201d newspaper<\/a>, blacks and mixed (50.7% of Brazil\u2019s population) were only 15% the five new airing TV soap operas in 2015. Left side, Brazilian population, right side, soap opera&#8217;s actors Taken from: http:\/\/temas.folha.uol.com.br\/desigualdade-no-brasil\/negros\/com-metade-da-populacao-negros-sao-so-18-em-cargos-de-destaque-no-brasil.shtml<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Does that situation improve among Globo\u2019s awards for best actors of the year?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using the self identification criteria (that prevails in Brazil), it is possible to demonstrate that In the 20 editions of the awards, out of 40 winners (<a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pr%C3%AAmio_Globo_de_Melhores_do_Ano_de_melhor_ator\">20 men<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pr%C3%AAmio_Globo_de_Melhores_do_Ano_de_melhor_atriz\">20 women<\/a>), only 3 (7.5%) were black or mixed: Ta\u00eds Ara\u00fajo, Camila Pitanga, and L\u00e1zaro Ramos. 7.5% from a group that corresponds to more than half of Brazil\u2019s population\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It gets worse when we get to the nominees. Among the 96 contenders from that time period, only Juliana Paes gets added (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vilamulher.com.br\/beleza\/rosto\/juliana-paes-esta-pensando-em-aplicar-botox-no-rosto-613340.html\">she considers herself mixed<\/a>), so only 4 out of 98, 4.16%.
