Dear readers, I’ve decided to make a list with the greatest homegrown player by each of the 20 great Brazilian football clubs.
Besides the 17 teams that have won the Brazilian League (Atlético-MG, Atlético-PR, Bahia, Botafogo, Corinthians, Coritiba, Cruzeiro, Flamengo, Fluminense, Grêmio, Guarani, Internacional, Palmeiras, Santos, São Paulo, Sport-PE e Vasco), I’ve added Vitória-BA, Goiás e Portuguesa-SP (clubs, among those that have not won the league, with the most first division seasons played).
There are players who have played in several youth systems. In those cases, I will place the player in the club where he initiated his professional career.
It is important to say that “greatest” does not mean necessarily “better”. Unfortunately, some excellent players won’t make the list, while others, perhaps not as skillful, will join it because of greater national/international success (club and national team titles, national team call-ups, World Cup games, among other things).
